The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerdá, today defended a "greater focus and unity" of the domestic sector of nuts for "best market prices" and announced that the almond-producing regions are working to "promote a domestic supply from the low prices received by producers. "
The owner of Agriculture and Water made the remarks during his visit to the company 'Almonds Murcia' of Fuente Alamo, due to new investments and installation of solar panels in the cooperative for cost optimization.
Cerda said that although Spain "represents 10 percent of world production of almonds," European Union "is deficient and has to import it."
"The problem is that the supply in Spain is fragmented and concentrated demand," he said Cerda, who said that "for the domestic sector is a disadvantage."
He stressed the importance of the union of producers "to better defend the price in the market, since in this way enables the viability of the sector," he said.
He also emphasized the "high degree of productivity and social and environmental role" that represents this culture, because "in addition to generating labor, helps to stem erosion and desertification strong risk that exists in marginal areas of the Region" .
Responsible for Agriculture stressed that the region is one of the largest almond producing areas in Spain with an average production of the last decade of 30,000 tons, representing 20 percent of national production.
The regional acreage is 70,000 acres, 16 percent of the national total.
Cooperative Society 'Almonds Murcia' of Fuente Alamo was founded in 1989 and currently consists of over 600 partners.
It has an area of over 6,000 hectares and has a production potential of 4,000 tons of almond and carob.
